Application Requirement Details

​​​​​​​In addition to the completed Council for Global Immigration J-1 sponsorship questionnaires, there are a number ​of documents that must be ​submitted to CFGI in order for the J-1 application to be complete, as identified below.​​​

CFGI is currently designated by the U.S. Department of State to sponsor J-1 programs in the following occupational categories:  Management, Business, Commerce, & Finance; Information Media & Communications (trainee programs only); Public Administration & Law; and The Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics, & Industrial Occupations.

Please note, an application package must be complete before it is officially filed. When filing multiple applications, copies of all attachments must be included ​​with​​ each application.

The documentation required for​​ each applicatio​​​n for new J-1 sponsorship includes:​

Membership​​ & Company Size

  • Confirmation of an active membership with CFGI. Membership must be maintained throughout the duration of any ​sponsored J-1 Traine​​e or Intern program. To learn more about CFGI's membership eligibility and to join CFGI, click here.​
  • For CFGI to sponsor a J-1 program for an organization, it must have at least 250 employees worldwide.   This figure can include full-time employee counts from subsidiary and/or affiliate companies in the United States or overseas.

Trainee/Intern Prog​ram I​​​nformation

  • Completed and signed DS-7002 form ("Training/Internship Placement Plan (T/IPP)"). To help host organizations complete the Form DS-7002, CFGI has created a step-by-step guide on filling out the form and has compiled important tips for host organizations to remember.  Please note:  a signed copy, along with a copy of the fillable-PDF version, is required with each application (due to new SEVIS requirements).
  • Detailed training syllabus or training plan that provides additional detail on the proposed J-1 program. This is required in addition to the completed DS-7002 form.
  • Detailed description of the local/logistical orientation that the employer will provide to the participant upon his/her arrival in the United States.
  • Detailed d​escripti​on of the cross-cultural activities that will be made available to the participant during his/her period of training in the United States.

Exchange V​isitor Info​rmation

  • Comprehensive up-to-date copy of the participant's CV/resume in English
  • Letters from cu​rrent and past employers verifying past employment history (for Trainee candidates)*
  • Copy of participant​'s academic degree(s), complete official academic transcript or official documentation showing enrollment or graduation status and certified English translation, as appropriate
  • Documentation co​nfirming adequate English language skills as evidenced by one of the following:
    • English language test (TOEFL, TOEIC, etc.)
    • Signed doc​umentation (in English) from an academic institution or English language school
    • Completed ​and signed CFGI English verification form completed by a representative from the U.S. Ho​st Organization who has interviewed the candidate in person, via videoconference or via teleconference
  • Proof of medic​al insurance
  • Complete c​opy of the participant's passport (and those of all accompanying dependents, if applicable). Copies of any previous U.S. visa​ stamps should also be provided.​

*Employment verification letters are required for trainees in order to confirm that they either have a foreign academic d​​egree/diploma and a minimum of one year of full-time relevant professional experience, or have five or more years of relevant, full-time professional experience and do not have a foreign academic degree/certificate.​​​​
