“President Donald Trump's administration has signaled that the number of Form I-9 employment eligibility verification audits will significantly escalate in 2018.

“Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Thomas Homan announced in October 2017 that his agency plans to increase worksite investigations of employers by ‘four or five times’ this year. Homan said that ICE intends to refocus on eliminating the ‘magnet’ of U.S. jobs, considered to be a driving factor in illegal immigration.

“All U.S. employers are subject to an ICE audit of workers' employment eligibility. No matter if you oversee hiring at a large company with multiple offices across the U.S., or you're an HR manager at a small business…it is your responsibility to ensure I-9 compliance at your organization. Employers found not in compliance could face large civil fines and criminal penalties, loss of their business licenses, or debarment from government contracts.

“Given ICE's renewed attention on holding employers accountable, HR professionals involved in hiring and employment verification should ensure that they are ready for a worksite audit.

“One way to do that is by completing The Employment Eligibility: A Practical Guide to I-9 and E-Verify online course from the Council for Global Immigration, an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management.

“The course is a comprehensive overview of employment eligibility laws and regulations, Form I-9 requirements and the E-Verify system, including how to handle typical case results. It includes real-life scenarios and activities, which will prepare users to effectively manage the employment verification process.”
