High-Skilled Visa Shortages Damage U.S. Economic Grow​th


Employers Urge Congres​s to Increase H-1B Visas and Harness Potential for Greater Growth, Innovation

 

The start of the new fiscal year is just around the corner – when U.S. employers can begin working with the highly educated professionals they hired after filing for new H-1B visas – that is, if they were able to get a visa.

Visa caps hit in just one week this year: The demand was so high for the H-1B visas available under current law – 65,000 plus an additional 20,000 for foreign nationals with a U.S. advanced degree – that they were fully used during the first week of the filing period this past April.

This year is not unusual. For the past nine years, the supply of H-1B visas has run out before the fiscal year has ended.

Because H-1B caps are arbitrarily set, once they are reached, America is forced to wait – often for long periods of time – for the great contributions highly educated, foreign-born professionals make to U.S. economic growth, job creation and innovation.

Immigration reform is the solution.
